KRS-ONE

As per usual...I just don't have the time or energy to write up a bio on the man, KRS-One. Enjoy the discography though...I will try to find someone to write one of these up for me.

Albums

Return Of The Boom Bap - Jive/Zomba 1993 (41517)

If you thought KRS was falling off...think again. After enlisting the production of DJ Premier, Kid Capri, and few others, he provided fans with a new and updated sound for '93. With hits like 'Outta Here', 'Sound Of Da Police', 'P Is Still Free', and the hillarious 'I Can't Wake Up', KRS-One finally regained some of the love he lost with "Edutainment" and "Sex & Violence" (even though I consider those albums to be very good). KRS-ONE - Jive/Zomba 1995 (41570)

In general, the people who loved his 1st album, were a little dissapointed with this one. And those who didn't like his first album were really feeling this release. In any respect, this is somewhat a more mellow album, with KRS-One taking care of much of the production. And the general response to this release was quite positive with both old-school and new-school hip-hop fans expressing their amazement at how consistently dope the Blastmaster has been over the years. Tracks to check for include: 'Rappaz R.N. Dainja', 'MCs Act Like They Don't Know', 'Wannabeemceez', 'Build Ya Skillz', and 'Squash All Beef'. Rappaz R.N. Dainja

I Got Next- Jive/Zomba 1997 (41601)

Unfortunately, if there is one album that nearly all KRS/BDP fans didn't like, it was this album. With somewhat weaker and almost crossover production, and a slight decline in the quality of KRS's rhymes, people were not impressed with "I Got Next". What was also very irritating about his album is the length of many songs...2-3 minutes maximum...with lots of dumb 20 second segments in between. 1st Quarter - Commentary
2nd Quarter - Free Throws

Singles

Outta Here - Jive/Zomba 1993 (42146)

Holy shit! Did KRS ever come out with a bang on this sucker...'Outta Here' was literally a big slap in the face of all fake MC's and commercial hip-hop acts. On the b-side was a hillarious blunt-passing track called 'I Can't Wake Up'. Oh yeah, for some reason, the idiots at jive left the phenominal 'Feel The Vibe, Feel The Beat' off the vinyl...damn. Sound Of Da Police - Jive/Zomba 1993 (42191)

This is a very interesting 12". 'Hip Hop VS Rap', which was left off the LP (which is kind of a shame), is kind of a big shout out to hip-hop music and culture. On the b-side is a remix to 'Sound Of Da Police' which isn't too bad...although I prefered the original better. In any respect, this 12" is a good one for KRS fans to have...but others may not find it that great. Sound Of Da Police (LP Version)

Sound Of Da Police (Remix Instrumental)
Hip Hop VS Rap (Acapella)

Return Of The Boom Bap - Jive/Zomba 1994 (42208)

Yet another KRS 12" that didn't really hit as hard as it could have. Both LP versions are incredible...but the remixes are much darker and a bit more difficult to get into. Oh yeah, Mad Lion lays down a verse on the Boom Bap remix...but it's nothing too special. Return Of The Boom Bap (LP Version)
Return Of The Boom Bap (Iron Lion Remix featuring Mad Lion)
Return Of The Boom Bap (LP Instrumental)
Mortal Thought (LP Version)
Mortal Thought (Kenny Parker Remix)
Mortal Thought (Thoughtapella)

Ah Yeah - Front Page 1995

Here's a great song that was included as a bonus cut on the "KRS One" CD. With gritty yet simple production, KRS drops some powerful conscious rhymes on this 12". Ah Yeah (Intro)
Ah Yeah (Radio Mix)

Ah Yeah (Album Mix)
Ah Yeah (Acappella)

MC's Act Like They Don't Know - Jive/Zomba 1995 (42321)

Here's a hot 12" that showcases two new tracks off KRS's self-titled album. The a-side, produced by DJ Premier, drew even more fans to KRS as he tore it up over that red-hot Primo beat. On the b-side was actually a decent track he did with Das Efx. Not bad considering Das Efx had basically fallen off at this point and were trying to revive their career again. The only downside to this 12" is the lack of remixes... MC's Act Like They Don't Know (LP Version)

Rappaz R N Danja/Wanna-Be-Mceez - Front Page 1995 (03)

Strangely enough, KRS released this 12" on his own Front Page label...and unfortunately, there are no remixes on this one either. Regardless, 'Rappaz...' was a tight track featuring that dope OC hook taken from his classic "Times Up". Rappaz R N Danja (Street)

Wanna-Be-Mceez (Vocal)

Happy Verse Day- X-Clue_Ziv 1995 (XCZ 001)

This is some strange 12" KRS & Channel Live put out in '95. It's not that great but it does feature a couple of mixes of the track. Essentially a must have for KRS or Channel Live fans only... Happy Verse Day (Street Mix)
Happy Verse Day (Clean Mix)

Happy Verse Day (Tape Master Mix)

The MC/Word Perfect/Can't Stop, Won't Stop- Jive/Zomba 1996 (42425)

This 3 song 12"/EP basically gave heads a taste of what KRS was going to drop a year from now. The tracks weren't all that bad but people were kinda frontin on the dark and uninspired production...were's Primo when you need him!! It should be noted that 'Wordperfect' was left off the LP... Step Into A World (Rapture's Delight)- Jive/Zomba 1997 (42442)

Wow! Here's a 12" that really got heads hyped about the new LP. Featuring some hot Jesse West production, and Blondie on the hook, this track got heavy rotation on most hip-hop shows. Step Into A World (LP Version)
Step Into A World (Radio Edit)
Step Into A World (Instrumental)

Step Into A World Remix- Jive/Zomba 1997 (42463)

Uh-Oh...a Puff Daddy remix...featuring Puffy himself...ahhhhh! Well, in all honesty, it's actually not too bad as it lifts two of my all-time favorite beats: "Soul Clap" by Showbiz & AG, and "Nobody Beats The Biz" by Biz Markie. My question is what's the deal about the the for five different versions of the identical track...weird? Step Into A World Remix (Main Pass)

Step Into A World Remix (Radio Version)
Step Into A World Remix (Radio Edit)
Step Into A World Remix (LP Version)

Heartbeat/A Friend- Jive/Zomba 1997 (42474)

Yet another 12", without remixes, that features two mediocre tracks off the LP. I guess he was going for more airplay as the a-side features Angie Martinez and Redman... Heartbeat (Radio Edit)
Heartbeat (LP Version)
Heartbeat (Instrumental)
A Friend (Radio Edit)

Additional Tracks

Break The Chain- Marvel Comics/Jive 1994

In case you forgot...or you have no idea what this is, it was KRS's venture into the Comic world with his very own Marvel Comic entitled "Break The Chain". The character he played was Big Joe Krash...and I really enjoyed his work on this one. Although the track listing for the tape lists three songs, it's actually an audio cassette that accompanies the comic...thus the term Psychosonic Comic...hehe. Anyways, of the three songs on the tape, I liked 'Break The Chain' the best...and if I recall correctly, there was a video for this too... Who Am I

Digital- FFRR/Polygram 1997 (570057)

A lot of folks were crying foul over this 12"...but you know what, it's actually not that bad. Both hip-hop heads and drum n' bass heads showed love for this 12" as Hip-Hop legend, KRS One, teamed up with Drum N Bass legend, Goldie, to create 'Digital'. Of the four distinct versions, I personally enjoyed the Original and VIP mixes the best...with Armand's Mixes and the Boymerang Mix following closely behind. Digital (Original Mix)
Digital (V.I.P. Mix)
Digital (Boymerang Mix)
Digital (Radio Edit)
Digital (Armand Van Helden's Speed Garage Mix)
Digital (Armand Van Helden's Dub)
