Biz Markie

This crazy looking individual is none other than the famous Biz Markie of Marley Marl's Juice Crew fame. Before Busta Rhymez, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Humpty Hump, the crazy, funny guy in hip-hop back in '87 was the Biz. Not only was he funny, but he made great, legendary music as well. As you could probably imagine, he had quite the stage show (I heard he did an entire show wearing only an oversized diaper???). Anyhow, Biz got his start when he and nieghbourhood buddy, Big Daddy Kane met up with Juice Crew co-founder, Marley Marl. Not only did he become a member of one of the most celebrated crews of MC's, he also signed a deal with Cold Chillin' Records and released the historic album, "Goin' Off".

The one thing that makes Biz Markie so popular is his personality. It's amazing, but when you look at Biz's skills in the most objective manner, you soon learn to realize that he has only an average delivery at best and his lyrics are far from complex or ground-breaking. It is his raw charisma and outrageous style of emceeing (and beatboxing) which make him shine well above the rest. Couple this with some of the tightest beats ever put forth on a peice of wax and you essentially have "Goin' Off". If you've never actually picked up the record and listened to it yourself, chances are, you've heard most of it already. Everyone from Soul II Soul to Pete Rock to Q-Tip to even Teddy Riley have sampled elements (if not entire tracks) from this album. 'Pickin' Boogers', 'Vapours', 'Make the Music...', 'Something for the...' and 'Nobody Beats the Biz' are sure to please let alone sound VERY familiar.

After his first album, "Goin' Off", Biz started to gain even more popularity. The song 'Just a Freind' off the album "The Biz Never Sleeps" was number one on quite a few radio stations as well as the charts. Even on his following three albums his songs remained very funny and entertaining and the beats still remained reasonably solid as well. Sure, "The Biz Never Sleeps", "I Need a Haircut", and "All Samples Cleared" never really matched the quality of "Goin' Off", but the Biz still remained a crowd favorite throughout his career and never really fell off hard like many of his fellow members of the Juice Crew. He had this uncanning ability to inject life into nearly any type of song imaginable - which is probably responsible for his continued popularity even today.
